Also, Ryan Vogelsong going deep into games can be part of the committee. And maybe, hoping beyond hope, Tim Lincecum can do that, too.
Santiago Casilla got the save last night, but boy, he didn’t instill a lot of faith in anyone. Not Bruce Bochy. One walk was enough to get Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez going in the bullpen. And not the fans, who gave a cheer for Romo popping out of the bullpen. They weren’t needed, but Casilla sure gave up a couple of loud, loud outs.
Honestly, the Giants need some bullpen help. I never thought I’d say that I miss Mota, but the bullpen is thin. I don’t exactly feel secure with Hensley or Loux in there. Gotta say, it does look like Sabean pulled off another good trade when he got Kontos, though he needs to get in there more. But with Mota probably not going to be back after this season, the Giants could use someone from the minors stepping up.
I’m still a big fan of Dan Otero and Steve Edlefsen. Neither endeared themselves to Giants fans earlier this season. But neither are showing overly well in Fresno. Edlefsen’s got a 2.84 ERA with 10 walks against eight strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings. Otero’s got a 3.60 ERA in 30 innings, but he’s showing that control with just three walks and 18 strikeouts.
Someone’s going to have to step up. Before next season, probably this season. It’s just going to be hard waiting.
