Many of the female sports fans I know have had this experience…some guy assumes they don’t know anything about sports, so they just start trying to explain the game to these girls. There’s even been articles written about it.
Of course, there are some girls who need the explanations. But I know a lot of girls who know far more about the intricacies of the game than many of the guys out there.
As a guy, I’ve seen a lot of people make the judgments on girls as sports fans. Maybe they think the girls are just humoring men…or are trying to meet one. (As if any girl in a major city needs to work so hard to meet a man…) I even saw it professionally as a sports writer, where one former player looked down at a female colleague of mine, and then tried to intimidate her when she asked questions that should have been asked.
Luckily, there are guys who get it. The player in question was immediately (and publicly) reprimanded by a veteran player on that team, and she received apologies from both other players and team management.
But, yeah, the stereotypes exist.
I don’t know why some guys feel the need to start explaining the game to every girl. I’ve certainly had some friends who were new to baseball that, as my friend, tried to take in the game. And sure, I would explain the game to them, because they would ask about what’s going on. And hell, I’ll admit that I enjoyed trying to use that to impress girls. But never to strangers out of nowhere. But hey, it happens. I guess it’s just one of the few ways that some guys think they can impress girls.
However, in the context of the entire world, I’m not sure that being able to explain a game, even the intricacies, should qualify as all that impressive. Just saying…
