I don’t know if it was the fact that nearly everyone knew that Kent was as good as gone after 2002, or that he went to a team like the Astros, but that didn’t hurt nearly as much.

And that’s considering that Jeff Kent was a much bigger player to the Giants than Uribe.  Kent was an MVP with the Giants.  He made Brian Sabean (Yea, I went there, too).  His arrival spurned the first major turnaround for the Giants in the mid-90’s.  And he protected Barry Bonds the way no one else in his career did.

Or maybe we were just all too foolish about Edgardo Alfonzo being another Sabean-magic pickup to replace that middle-of-the-order role.  No one is that way about Uribe’s replacement: Miguel Tejada.
